winning at life

Written for [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse

If life's a game, aren't the winners the ones with the most things at the end? Money and power, that sort of thing is what I'm talking about. Seems to me that life's really good for the people who get to flaunt their wealth and influence. They can breeze through it with no worries, getting to control the rest of us as if we're they're bloody servants or something.

Back home, my ex-girlfriend's family had a lot of money and influence. They were very well respected because people were afraid of them. But they treated everyone else like absolute shit. Least the men of the family did. Andrea's mother was a nice enough lady. Andrea was lovely, of course, or I wouldn't have fallen in love with her. But her dad and brother were bastards. I worked for Mr. Sterling (that's Andrea's father) and he never even knew my name. Had no clue who I was. I was only some faceless robot there to serve him, not a human being like him.

Anyone who has a bit of power will take advantage and use it to make others feel small and useless, as if they don't matter one bit. It's bollocks and I hate it. It's a sad thing that those tossers are the ones who always seem to win.

knowing and walking

145. There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Shy stared up at the ceiling. Sleep had been evading him all night long and no amount of tossing and turning would relieve him of his insomnia.

There were certain things he knew to be true about himself, things that had never come into question before. Likewise, there were things about the world around him that he understood and accepted without judgement or question.

Within the last twenty-four hours, though, it felt as if what he thought he knew and what was real were very different things. For the first time in his life, Shy was seeing himself for the man he really was. And that was enough to keep him up at night.

ten things

Written for [livejournal.com profile] thetenspot

TEN things you would do if you found a seriously lucky Rabbit's Foot.

1. Play the lottery so I could win enough money to get my face fixed.
2. Go sky diving every day.
3. Go to Hollywood and try to become an actor so I can date all the actresses I want.
4. Go bungee jumping every day.
5. Surf in shark infested waters.
6. Climb Mt. Everest.
7. Have unprotected sex.
8. Go to Vegas and be a high roller so I'll get treated like a big shot by one of those fancy hotels.
9. Go home.
10. Fall in love again.
